Summer Programs for Middle & Upper School

For athletes looking to transform and maximize their athleticism, Coach Wheel will be leading three training sessions per day. The program will improve an athlete’s strength, speed, agility, vertical jump, flexibility, and more. 

 

Once you have registered, you will set up your schedule with Coach Wheel.  Registration is available throughout the summer as long as there are spaces available. 

 

Enrollment slots are limited in these sections, so students who repeatedly miss without communicating with Coach Wheel may be dropped from the camp so another student can use the space.

Calling youth and middle school basketball players of all ages and skill levels! Whether you are just learning about the game of basketball or are a seasoned veteran, the summer is a great time to work on your basketball skills. During these sessions, students improve upon fundamentals while having fun and learning team-building concepts. Players are grouped according to age and skill level for optimal learning and improvement.

This week-long workshop combines whole group instruction, individual work time, and one-on-one writing conferences, resulting in a draft of either the Common App Personal Statement or the UC Personal Insight Questions. During whole-group instruction, students will learn the place of the essay(s) in admissions, the strategy of choosing the right individual topic in order to round out an application, and the function of supplemental questions (for Common App schools). We will read and critique sample essays together so that students have a sense of personal writing as a genre and the wide range of topics that are possible for creating an engaging piece of writing. Whole-group instruction will be approximately an hour on the first day of the workshop, and much less for the remaining four days. Students will have a 20-minute (approximately) one-on-one meeting with the instructor each day, where we will generate topics together and discuss feedback and editing. Students will need a laptop and access to Google Docs.

In this workshop, students will learn how to conduct a trial, including opening statements, direct examination, cross examination, and closing arguments, while building their argumentation and critical analysis skills. Students will assume the roles of witnesses and attorneys for the defense and prosecution teams. Instruction will include advanced trial techniques like objections and witness impeachment, using real-life prosecutors, defense attorneys, and famous trials as examples. The workshop will conclude with students conducting 1-2 full length trials!

This camp teaches the basics of knitting and sets kids up to knit at a higher level. Beginners will learn to do a knit stitch, fix common mistakes, make garter stitch squares, and sew them into personalized little bunnies. These skills are the foundation of every knit project and can be used to knit the penguin, hat, mitten, and scarf patterns provided at the end of camp!

In this 4 day course, students will learn to carve wood into interesting shapes and figures. They will be able to creatively engage with the natural world, and learn the skills of the age-old art of turning pieces of wood into cool things! Students have “ideas worth spreading” (the TED motto), and society needs to hear them! TED is an organization that aims to “discover and spread ideas that spark imagination, embrace possibility and catalyze impact.” We will ambitiously try to do the same this summer. Students will select topics, write and revise scripts, build a slides deck, and organize a one-day TED-style conference at which they will video record their TED-style talks. The presenters will become more skillful writers, more confident speakers, and more motivated citizens to use their voice to make a difference.

In this week-long course, enrolled students will be introduced to the amazing avian world of North County San Diego.  Students will learn to spot, identify, and record sightings in this outdoor class.  While out in the various habitats found near PRS, students will learn basic skills associated with ornithology in the best classroom: nature! Students will leave with a general understanding of how and where to find certain common species found in North County San Diego, how to interact with the natural world without disturbing it, and how to get involved in the citizen science world.  Leave campus for the morning and take flight on a tweet-worthy adventure!

Intermediate and Advanced players will have the opportunity to study the game of chess on a deeper level through analysis and advanced tactics and strategies.  Daily class routines include advanced chess puzzles as warm-up, head-to-head rapid chess matches with other members of the class, replay and review of previous matches, and fun games including bughouse and limitless chess.  The course culminates in a blitz chess tournament.

Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and it’s a tool that students must learn to employ purposefully and ethically.  In this course, we will engage with generative AI to accomplish different tasks.  Students will be challenged to rethink problems and solutions, refine prompts to yield better products, and critically think as they question the validity of the AI output.  The best way to learn is to take a deep dive, then sink or swim in the muck of this fast-evolving technology.

Want to start cooking like a chef? This class will start you on your way! You will be exploring the ins and outs of eating and cooking from farm to table! We will be visiting a farm, learning how our food is grown and its importance, frying, sautéing and exploring flavors to unleash your creative side. "Playing with your food” is A-okay when creating and decorating your dishes! We will learn to make several courses, from quick breakfast and lunch to main dishes and desserts. Graphic stories can tell a variety of stories across a wide spectrum of genres (fiction, non-fiction, autobiography, journalism) and speak to diverse audiences with impact. This class will focus on fiction.

 

Compared to other literary genres, graphic stories are a relatively new invention and they are evolving each year. New forms of the genre, like Manga, are proving to be wildly popular, especially with young readers. Why do readers love comics and graphic novels so much? Why are they so compelling? 

 

In this class, students will study a range of graphic stories to learn how to read and analyze the art form. We will look at how graphic artists develop plot, characters, themes, and communicate emotion. Then, the class will guide students through the making of a short fictional graphic story. Spend the week learning about different artistic and cultural approaches to crafting beaded ornaments. Using plastic, glass, and Heishi beads students will be able to create various types of beaded accessories. Students will have the option to spend longer to create more detailed pieces using beads and canvas or spend the week crafting easier trinkets such as bracelets, wristlets and more.

This class is open to beginners and more experienced crochet students alike! We will cover the basic stitches of crochet and select a couple of projects together as a group. More experienced students can work on more advanced stitches. Crochet is a relaxing, almost meditative activity that is both creative and challenging.  Each student will receive a starter set of crochet hooks and tools. The course will provide some basic yarn colors and styles for students. However, students are welcome to purchase additional yarn of their choosing based on their style preferences and project type. No script? No problem! Using a series of improvisation games and exercises, students will develop not only their confidence and creativity but also their listening and public speaking skills. We will learn how to trust and support our scene partners, build an ensemble, and provide a full story arc within an improvised sketch. Whether students are interested in acting or not, this all-purpose creative expression class will meet them where they’re at, moment to moment. This camp is facilitated by Michael Fisher, a new Pacific Ridge English teacher and improv leader. Michael has led improv clubs with students since 2018 and has trained with the San Francisco Mime Troupe and Medicine Theater in the Bay Area.

What is a Rube Goldberg machine? It is a contraption that uses a chain reaction to carry out a simple task. It performs a very basic job in a complicated way.  The first 2 days of our camp, each camper will identify their own task to achieve, brainstorm a series of actions that will complete the task, gather their own materials, then build, test and perfect their machine. For the remaining time, campers will work collectively to build a marble run by taping cardboards, scraps, and recyclables on a wall, making different paths for a marble to follow. Come join us on this journey of exploring and experimenting with physical principles.

This course will inspire your inner engineer! Students will design and build robots using Tetrix parts, foam, and cardboard in a fun but competitive environment. They will pair up in groups or go individually to play various mini competitions that require unique ideas on how to construct their robot. The course will cover how to control robots, then we will apply these concepts to real applications on our machines. Students will learn about the design process and utilize it to effectively plan out their robot designs. We will test, troubleshoot, and revise designs to improve robot performance as well as give students hands-on experience in robot control. Students of all levels of experience are invited to join, and anyone with previous robotics experience should consider enrolling in the Robotics 2: Level Up camps.

Well, beginning with this simple four-stringed instrument is an excellent way to develop right and left-hand technique, learn basic chords, and start strumming. In this camp we will spend time learning the basics and building comfort listening and playing music in a group. We will progress toward learning some fun and easy pop songs students will gain confidence playing on their own. And we will definitely jam out and simply enjoy the thrill of playing music! This fiber arts class focuses on two different ways to decorate material: cross-stitch and embroidery.  Starting with cross-stitch, students will learn how to prepare their thread and fabric and follow cross-stitch patterns.  As we move on to embroidery, students will learn several types of embroidery stitches to create different textures and designs.  Benefits of cross-stitch and embroidery include stress reduction, increased focus, and development of fine motor skills.  Each student will receive a starter kit including hoops, fabrics, needles, and embroidery floss in several colors.  Students are also welcome to bring additional floss colors and materials to create their own unique designs.  Suitable for beginners and experts alike, join us and create something amazing!

Enrollment prerequisite:  Campers must have previous robotics experience for this camp, either having participated in a Robotics: BattleBots! camp during the past two summers, or having done robotics elsewhere.  

 

This course is the next step in your inner robotics journey. Students will build and design robots to compete in unique and difficult challenges. These robotic designs take days to make and will be a good simulation of what students can expect in future courses and clubs.  Students will be put in groups of 2 and given the materials to build a robot that they will operate together.  Students will compete for points in different contests, while trying to beat the other team with gracious professionalism. They will be forced to think out of the box to get the most points and win the competition. Students can register for both Level Up camps if they choose - the experience will be different in each one.

Like playing with Mud?! Let’s create art with it!  Students in this camp will adventure into the world of hand building with clay, and learn how to create art with their hands, using tools to create unique forms of art.

 

Projects include but are not limited to:  “Pinch” Pots, working with clay slabs, creating projects using coils, glazing techniques, and intro into the pottery wheel.

Note: Due to drying times and clay firing processes, finished projects will be worked on until the final day of camp, glaze fired over the weekend, and be available for pick up during the following week.

In this camp, students will dive into the art of personal narrative writing, framing their own stories through the craft of creative nonfiction. We will draw on aspects of our social identities and personal experiences, and we will practice drafting through multiple writing stages. Students will also practice peer review and revision, which will lead to a final piece they complete at the end of the camp. Our sessions will feel like friends having fun, but it will also be time spent learning important personal, professional, and academic skills that will prove useful again and again. This camp is facilitated by Michael Fisher, a new Pacific Ridge English teacher and long-time writer, blogger, and essayist.

AP Chemistry is a fast-paced, rigorous science course. Students have roughly 7 months to learn a full year of collegiate chemistry. At the end of this time, they will take a cumulative exam that will often allow them, if successful, to bypass their general chemistry course in college. AP Chemistry sets a high bar, so preparation is essential. This course is designed to facilitate review of the foundational concepts learned in each student’s 10th grade chemistry course, and give each student an understanding of what it means to work at a collegiate level in science. The course is tailored to PRS students, but will also serve as a general primer for students who plan to take AP Chemistry at other schools. Part I of this two-week course will focus on PRS’s AP Chemistry summer assignment, and Part II will be a deeper dive into cornerstone concepts and skills. Enrollment in both weeks of the course is strongly recommended, but not required. By the end of the course, students will have reviewed important foundational concepts and skills related to atomic structure, the periodic table, and stoichiometry. In addition, PRS students will have completed the majority of their AP Chemistry summer assignment. Most importantly, those who choose to participate in this course will be prepared to learn AP Chemistry with the speed and the level of rigor that the course demands.

They will learn how to read for writing, brainstorm, develop a strong thesis statement, use supporting evidence, expand and analyze ideas, draft, and gain comfort with revision as the most important part of the writing process. This essay-writing workshop will benefit all Middle School students, whether they are building their writing foundations or simply wish to gain more practice and confidence with persuasive essay writing.

I’m not arguing with you, I’m just explaining why I’m right! In Debate Camp, students will work together to research a topic, write an argument for or against the resolution, and present their case through exploring Public Forum and Parliamentary debate formats used by our local middle school and high school competitive debate leagues. We will discuss strategies for not only building one's own case but also anticipating counterarguments and responding directly to an opponent's claims. We will hone our research skills and explore topics with real-world relevance, while also practicing good sportsmanship and teamwork. Profe Hernandez is an Upper School history teacher at Pacific Ridge School, and is the instructor for the Middle School Debate Team during the year.

This week-long course is designed to make students feel comfortable using hand tools and power tools to build, fix, and solve problems.  Students will receive instruction in different ways to cut, attach, shape, and finish wood and other materials, while also learning how to handle tools safely.  Each student will leave camp with a finished project of his or her own design and the knowledge of how to use tools to create solutions.

Join us for an exciting week of linoleum printmaking! This camp will introduce students to the fascinating process of carving designs onto linoleum blocks and transforming them into stunning prints. Throughout the camp, participants will learn the fundamentals of linocut techniques, from sketching and transferring designs onto blocks to carving details with precision tools.

Want to start cooking like a chef? This class will start you on your way! You will be exploring the ins and outs of eating and cooking from farm to table! We will be visiting a farm, learning how our food is grown and its importance, frying, sautéing and exploring flavors to unleash your creative side. "Playing with your food” is A-okay when creating and decorating your dishes! We will learn to make several courses, from quick breakfast and lunch to main dishes and desserts. This course is for students who will be taking Chinese for the first time in this coming school year.  It will provide a preview of the core vocabularies and basic grammar structures of first year Chinese learning objectives so students can start the year with confidence. Topics such as greeting others, making a self-introduction, talking about family members, daily routines and personal hobbies will be covered through project presentation and role-play speaking exercises. One the last day of class, we will also do some Chinese culture related activities, e.g. writing Chinese calligraphy, painting Beijing Opera Mask, and making dumplings. This class will prepare Middle and Upper School students who are heading into Chinese A or Chinese 1.  Students with experience in Chinese should sign up for Chinese Primer:  Prepare for the Next Level instead of this course.

In the Leadership Accelerator, students will develop advanced leadership skills through real-life training and practice. Students will engage in an intensive, real-world exploration of leadership, government, and public policy. While doing so, they will communicate with elected officials, develop material for civic events, and learn how to lobby the government. The workshop will focus on formal leadership training, skills development in rhetoric, advocacy, and critical thinking, and collaboration with elected officials in a professional setting.
