Matthew Cheung ’18
Alumni News

Pacific Ridge School is proud to celebrate Matthew Cheung ’18 (Loyola Marymount University ’22), a freelance director and award-winning photographer whose creative work continues to make an impact. Recently recognized by both the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) and the Directors Guild of America (DGA), Matthew is using his passion for storytelling to highlight powerful human experiences through film.

Matthew was recently selected to participate in the Sony and Loyola Marymount Social Impact Lab, an initiative that supports filmmakers using their craft to create meaningful social impact. As part of the program, Matthew will direct a documentary following Anthony Pone, a shot put athlete, as he prepares to compete at the 2028 Paralympic Games.

Through this project, Matthew will capture more than an athletic journey—he will explore themes of perseverance, identity, and the pursuit of excellence. His work reflects the power of documentary storytelling to amplify voices, challenge perspectives, and connect audiences to experiences beyond their own.

From his time at Pacific Ridge to his continued success in the film industry, Matthew exemplifies the creativity, curiosity, and purpose-driven approach that defines our alumni community. We can’t wait to see the stories he continues to tell and the impact they inspire.
