Dr. Jacqueline Bonds, a professor and researcher at the University of San Diego, visited campus recently to speak with AP Psychology students about neuroscience, neurotransmitters, and her path to a career in research.

During her visit, students had the rare opportunity to hold and examine parts of a human brain while discussing how neurotransmitters influence communication between neurons. Dr. Bonds also led a hands-on demonstration about reflexes, using the classic knee-jerk response to show how quickly the nervous system can react.

Bonds' research investigates cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neural stem cell regulation, with an emphasis on neurogenesis, mitochondrial function, and membrane signaling pathways that support resilience and cognitive health.

“Bringing outside researchers into the classroom helps students see how the concepts they’re learning connect to real-world research,” said AP Psychology teacher Rachel Nagel. “It’s inspiring for them to meet professionals who are actively expanding what we know about the brain.”
