Dr. Shermer Tackles Critical Thinking, Conspiracy Theories
On Wednesday, December 2nd, Dr. Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, talked scientific reasoning, critical thinking and conspiracy theories during Community Life.
Dr. Shermer, a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University, demonstrated the power of suggestion by asking the audience to find hidden images in abstract photos and listen to a popular rock song played backwards. Students were surprised to find themselves seeing and hearing things that weren't actually there, and everyone enjoyed learning about the psychological components involved in such "tricks of the mind." Dr. Shermer encouraged students to pursue science and reason when faced with questionable truth, and to remain curious and skeptical of the world around them.
