Students Explore Social Identity Through Creative Expression

In the DIME (Diversity, Inclusivity, Multiculturalism, Equity) Skills class this trimester, 8th-grade students have been exploring what the National Association of Independent Schools refers to as the "Big Eight" social identifiers: ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. 
Students considered how the identifiers have impacted their own experiences and the experiences of others, while also engaging in discussions about stereotypes, power, privilege, and more. Each student completed a creative project, from videos to collages, representing a social identifier of their choice. During last week's "gallery walks," students and faculty were invited to view the projects, engage in conversation, and ask questions.
