Firebird Program 2018

For students entering 5th through 8th grade, the Firebird Program is the ultimate combination of learning and discovery. Each day includes morning elective sessions filled with hands-on, project-based learning. Campers can attend just for the morning, or extend their camp day by participating in an afternoon program.

The Firebird Afternoon program gets campers moving with fun PE-style games such as Steal the Bacon, Sharks and Minnows, Dodgeball and Capture the Flag. Campers will also participate in a variety of team sports such as basketball, soccer, kickball and Ultimate Frisbee.  Instructors will focus on sportsmanship and team building.

  • Photo Fun

    Program Dates: 6/25 - 7/6
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
    Grades: 5-8
    Instructor: Anna Pietrowski

    This two-week course will explore a variety of creative outlets through the lens of photography. Using digital SLR cameras (provided by Pacific Ridge School) students will learn both technical and artistic skills while capturing a range of subjects including portraits, landscapes, and abstracts. Students will practice basic and intermediate editing skills. We will craft imaginative projects using iPhoto and Photoshop while practicing how to offer positive and effective critique to fellow artists. At the conclusion of the course, students will compile a portfolio of their work.
  • Skateboard Design & Building Workshop

    Program Dates:  6/25 - 7/6
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
    Grades: 5-8

    In this program, students will use engineering, technology, math, and art to design and build their own custom skateboard decks! Students first sketch their ideas, then convert them into digital drawings using CAD 3D modeling software. Students will learn about vacuum-forming using Roarockit technology to laminate and bend wood.They will create their own foam molds by hand and laminate and press 7 sheets of maple veneers into a molded shape. Once the boards are pressed, students will create templates and cut out their boards, learning the safety and basic operation of power tools. After some final sanding, the students will seal their skateboard decks and can apply art to give their product a fun, custom touch. Each student will leave the course with her/his own custom skateboard deck!
     
  • Science Adventures with LabRats

    Program Dates:  6/25 - 7/6

    REGISTRATION CLOSED
    In this camp, students will explore multiple fields of science, such as chemistry, biology, engineering and physics. Students will perform a DNA extraction, build a spectroscope and engage in a widespread sampling of general science concepts. LabRats believes that inspiring kids today yields a better world tomorrow. This science camp will explore different disciplines, principles and concepts that each practice area experiences so that students can discover their favorite area of interest.

  • Robotics

    Program Dates: 7/9 - 7/20

    This course will inspire your inner engineer when you design and build robots with LEGO® MINDSTORMS®.

    We will explore
    computer programming fundamentals and hands-on design challenges in small, collaborative groups. Using high-quality motors, sensors, gears, wheels, axles, and other technical components, students will gain a better understanding of how technology works in real world applications. We will test, troubleshoot, and revise designs to improve robot performance as we teach our robots to interact with the world around them. Through experimentation, students will also explore mathematical concepts such as estimation, measurement, and velocity. Engineers of all levels of experience are invited to join!
  • Rocketry Explorations with LabRats

    Program Dates:  7/9 - 7/20
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
    Grades: 5-8

    Students will explore the principles of rocketry by constructing building and launching their own rockets! Various activities and demonstrations will explore the dynamics of physics, chemistry and propulsion. We’ll demonstrate the concepts of trajectory, stability, center of mass, center of pressure, and altitude measurement in a FUN and engaging manner.

  • Tinkering Camp

    Program Dates: 7/9 - 7/20
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
    Grades: 5-8
    Instructor: Kim Viernes
    Cost: $460
    In this session students will use their imagination to become creators and innovators. Students will engage in open-ended design challenges using real machine parts, hardware, and construction materials. We will learn through doing, celebrate our mistakes, and work together to design and build. The class is facilitated by Kim Viernes, parent/architect/graphic designer and founder of tinkering camp San Diego. Kim Viernes has been inspired by and trained at #tinkeringschoolsf. Curious?   • Artist's Studio

    Do you love art? Step into our studio and let your creativity blossom! We will explore the elements and principles of design and introduce you to new media and materials as you work on painting, drawing, and 3D projects. You'll have plenty of masterpieces to take home at the end of the camp!
     
  • STEAM Camp

    Program Dates: 7/23 - 8/3
    Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

    Don’t just learn about it. Create it! Discover your inner inventor in this two week session all about MAKING! Each day of camp students will experience new design-based projects to inspire their curiosity and creativity, and promote problem solving, collaboration, and fun! We will design electronic textiles, “draw” with 3D pens, make interactive games, construct robots with household items, design in 3D and more! Students will learn how to bring ideas to life with challenges designed to inspire the innovator within each of us. We will explore the design process from ideation to testing prototypes, and most importantly, we will make some really cool stuff!
  • What's Cooking? Creativity in the Kitchen

    Program Dates: 7/23 - 8/3

    Want to start cooking like a chef? This two-week class will start you on your way! You will be chopping, frying, sautėing and exploring flavors to unleash your creative side. "Playing with your food” is A-okay when creating and decorating your dishes!

    During the first week we will learn to make several courses, from soup and salad to main dishes and desserts. In the second week we will look into breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes. Finally, we will prepare a sweet surprise to share with parents on the last day of camp. Yum!
